Hi {{first_name}}

If you’ve ever told someone you’re a Product Manager (or aspiring to be one), you’ve probably heard one of these statements:

“Oh, Product Management? That job is easy.”

“Isn’t that just telling people what to do?”

Somewhere along the way, product management became known as the “accessible” tech career: strategic, well-paid, and seemingly open to anyone willing to try.

But here’s the uncomfortable question we don’t talk about enough:

If becoming a PM is so easy… why do so many capable people struggle to break in?

In this piece, we explore both the hard numbers (job market data, salaries, and role availability) and the soft costs: the investments in learning, community, mindset, and access to opportunity that matter most.

So… how easy is it really to become a PM?

If you’ve been on LinkedIn long enough, it can feel like everyone is becoming a PM overnight.

But visibility isn’t the same as accessibility.

According to LinkedIn’s 2024 Emerging Jobs Report, Product Management roles remain in high demand globally. Still, they are also among the most competitive roles, with many positions attracting hundreds of applicants within days of being posted.

A common belief is that product management is easy to enter if you’re smart or have startup experience. But the data and lived experience suggest otherwise.

Yes, there are more opportunities today than a few years ago. But breaking in, particularly without prior product experience, still requires more than interest and potential. It requires proof.

The real bottleneck shows up at the entry point.

“But there are no junior roles.” Is that true?

Not exactly.

According to Zippia, while there are thousands of Product Management job postings globally, entry-level and internship roles make up a much smaller share than mid- and senior-level roles.

In fact, many “junior” PM roles still quietly require:

  • Prior product experience

  • Technical exposure

  • Or experience shipping real products

This is why many aspiring PMs feel stuck in a loop:

“How do I get experience if no one hires PMs without experience?”

The uncomfortable answer: You may have to create your own.

You may not have held the PM title yet, but if you’ve spent months learning, practicing, and applying product thinking, you already have raw material to turn into proof.

The key is to make your thinking, process, and impact visible.

A few ways to do this:

  • Conduct structured product reviews
Break down the products you use every day. What problems are they solving? Where are the friction points? What would you improve? Document your analysis to show product thinking in action.

  • Build with AI (Vibe-coding)

Is there a feature or product you wish existed? Use no-code tools or AI-assisted building to create a scrappy version and add it to your portfolio. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s demonstrating how you think, prioritize, and solve problems.

  • Contribute to product conversations
Share thoughtful insights in product communities, discussions, and on social media. Product thinking is a muscle; visibility helps it grow.

  • Show your work

Your CV doesn’t need a PM title to show PM experience. What matters is evidence of problem-solving, decision-making, and impact. Don’t just list courses or certifications. Show projects, case studies, experiments, and outcomes. Hiring managers look for proof of product thinking and not just learning curves.
